MANSFIELD — If there were ever a break from politics and gloomy weather, actor Beau Roberts said he and his playmates hope “Whose Wives Are They Anyway?” can provide enough laughter to leave worries behind.

The play, which opens its doors Friday, April 8 at 8 p.m. and continues April 9, 15, 16 and 17 at the Mansfield Playhouse, revolves around employees of Ashley Maureen Cosmetics Company who have gone for a weekend of golf — without their wives. While at the Oakfield Golf and Country Club, the two — David McGachen played by Roberts and John Baker played by Kevin Hutchison — meet their new boss and C.E.O. of the makeup company, D.L. Hutchison. Their new boss insists on meeting their wives, telling the two, “No one who went golfing for a weekend without his wife would ever work for me.”

The two golfing buddies are forced to manufacture wives in order to remain employed. Baker dresses up as McGachen’s wife and “Inevitably everything goes wrong as John moves in and out of bedrooms, changing from male to female at a frantic pace. Hilarious chaos ensues when the hotel phone system goes on the blink,” according to a synopsis on the play’s Facebook page.

Whose wives are they anyway?

“It’s silly. It’s a farce. It’s fun,” said Roberts. “It’s kind of like an episode of ‘Three’s Company’ on steroids: really fast, ridiculous, but fun.”

Play director Doug Wertz said the show is a powerhouse of chaos with nine stage entrances leading to characters just missing each other during shift changes.

“If somebody likes comedy, fast-paced entrances happening simultaneously, this is the a show for you,” Wertz said. “It’s absolute entertainment.”

Wertz warned the play may not be family friendly as it contains adult humor.
