GALION, Ohio – Galion High School teacher Bill Stepro and his students made a recent journey to Columbus for an experiential learning opportunity.
Stepro’s Government and World History classes had the opportunity to tour the Ohio state capitol building, as well as a rare opportunity for personal interaction with their state legislators.
The purpose of the trip was for the students to experience a live session of the Ohio House of Representatives. It also allowed the students to see, first hand, the renovated state capitol building.
“The students had the opportunity to experience the debate over accepting immigrants that took place in the House of Representatives,” Stepro said. “It was an intriguing debate that I hope students will remember a long time.”
Prior to the building tour, students had the opportunity to meet their State Senator Dave Burke, and State Representative Jeff McClain, prior to him going into session with the General Assembly. Students spoke with both legislators on a myriad of topics that were important to them.
“Just as I believe every American should visit Washington D.C., so too should every Ohioan visit Columbus,” Stepro said. “This was an incredibly well mannered group of students that showed the high quality of the young people in our community.”
