Dean Edwin Stroup

Dean Edwin Stroup, 93, of Shelby, died Thursday morning, Jan. 7, 2016 at Ohio Health of Mansfield.

Born Aug. 9, 1922 in Shelby to Clarence and Anna (Bushey) Stroup, Dean was a Shelby resident his entire life. Dean graduated from Shelby High School and then served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was wounded while in Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart.

Dean graduated from Wittenberg Univeristy with a degree in business. He retired from Uforma/Shelby Business Forms after 38 years of service.

Dean was a member of the First Lutheran Church and a past member of the Shelby Country Club and Shelby Ad Club. He was also a member of the American Legion O’Brien Post, where he was past commander. He also served as a Cub Scout and Scout Master. Dean was also past chairman of the Shelby United Fund.

He was an expert gardener and loved sharing his vegetables and flowers with family and friends. Dean loved making shell creations and sharing them, too.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean (Simmons) Stroup; three sons Richard Stroup, of Washington D.C., Roger (Susan) Stroup, of Mansfield, and Robert (Kim) Stroup, of Brook Park; daughter Nancy (John) Medley, of Shelby; grandchildren Mathew, Michael and William Stroup, Julia (Justin) Behm, Andrea (Tom) Gingery, Christina Acernese, Nicole (Mike) Roberts, Ben (Erica) Medley, Michael (Katy) Medley, Jacob (Ashley) Medley, Aaron Stroup, Ryan (fiancé Mary Dolphin) Stroup; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marjorie (Jim) Stine and brother-in-law, Rev. Thomas Vossler, and granddaughter Maranda McKnight.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday Jan. 9, 2016 at the First Lutheran Church in Shelby. Pastor Russel Yoak will officiate with interment at Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.
