Frederick Wilson Barr, 89, of Galion, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016 at Signature Healthcare, Galion, after a brief illness.
Fred was born in Galion on Dec. 18, 1926, the son of the late Arlie Joseph Barr and Bessie May Wilson Barr. He married Virginia (Kreps) Mateer Barr on Aug. 30, 1997 and she survives him.
Fred was a 1944 graduate of Galion High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in Bremerton, Washington as a medic. In his military service, Fred ran a blood bank which included processing plasma to aid in the war effort.
He carried mail for the United States Postal Service in Galion and began his real estate career with his first wife, Barbara Carol Haspeslagh Barr who preceded him in death in 1996. Fred operated the Fred Barr Realty for 55 years and enjoyed both selling real estate and being an auctioneer. He was a man of faith and integrity, who loved his family.
Fred was a lifelong member of The First Lutheran Church, Galion and was the first to be baptized in the baptistery there. He was confirmed there as well. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 243, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1191, Galion.
He is survived by a daughter; Sherry (John) Ryan, Nashport and a son; Donald (Virginia) Barr, of Galion, stepchildren; Michael (Anne Marie) Mateer, Sean (Elizabeth) Mateer, Molly (Bill) Moore, grandchildren; Colleen (Nick) Dewald, Evan Ryan, Todd (Stephanie) Simmermacher, Tracy (Bob) Sayre, Tammi (Myles) Creed, Abby (Shawn) Fry, great-grandchildren; Rachel Sayre, Natalie Sayre, Sam Sayre, Noah Creed, Myla Creed, Lena Creed, Chloe DeMent, Kyle (Kelsey) Kohls, step great-grandchildren; Ava Kohls, Luke Kohls, and Addison Kohls.
Fred was preceded in death by a sister Marilyn Ruth Barr.
Friends may call Friday, Jan. 8, 2016 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way North, Galion. Funeral services will be held at The First Lutheran Church, Galion, on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 at 1 p.m., with Pastor Matt Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Galion. Full military honors will be given by the United States Navy and the Galion/Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
