MANSFIELD, Ohio – North End Community Improvement Collaborative (NECIC) will host a compost workshop at the Blust Avenue Teaching Garden, 417 Blust Ave., Mansfield, on Dec. 5 at 11 a.m.
During the workshop, attendees will receive hands-on experience as they assist the NECIC staff in building a three-bin composting system, as well as discover why this system is an efficient means of recycling kitchen and garden waste.
The Ohio State University Extension’s Fact Sheet on composting stated that yard wastes alone contribute between 15 and 20 percent of the solid waste generated by a city. This includes household bagging of leaves and discarded Christmas trees. leaf collection programs, utility company tree trimmings. and refuse from parks departments.
“By composting, residents can return valuable nutrients to the soil as well as reduce solid waste sent to landfills,” said NECIC Teaching Garden Coordinator Candace Harrell.
The event is free and open to the public. The Blust Avenue Teaching Garden is located at 417 Blust Avenue, just off Springmill and west of Bowman. Parking is available in the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church parking lot, located just west of Blust Avenue.
