Arthur C. Thompson, 91, Crestline, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2015 at the Ohio Veteran’s Home in Sandusky after a long illness.
Born April 26, 1924, in Buchanan, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Bert H. and Emma (Yates) Thompson. He married Mary K. (Poffenbaugh) on Nov. 23, 1950, celebrating 65 years of marriage.
Art proudly served three years in the United States Army during World War II in New Guinea, the Philippians, and Japan. In 1989, he retired from Galion Amco as a machine operator after 22 years of service. Prior to working at Galion Amco, he worked over 20 years at Westinghouse.
Art was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Crestline and the VFW Post 2920, Crestline. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. Art was proud of his large vegetable garden. Art enjoyed being involved with the Boy Scouts when his son, Jim, was younger. Art was able to visit every state in the U.S. during his lifetime. “A man of all works,” he could fix anything.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, James D. Thompson and Jody Shearer, both of Crestline, Diane S. Fordyce, of Cambridge, and Darlene K. and Jack Smarto, of Medina; five grandchildren, Jay David “J.D.” Fordyce, Matthew Thompson, Kyle Fordyce, Lindsay Carr, and Nathan Carr; five great-grandchildren, Olivia Fordyce, William “Will” Fordyce, Wyatt Fordyce, Cora Fordyce, and Benjamin Fordyce; one sister, Kay Grant of Lexington; sisters-in-law, Margery Swartz, of Attica, Dorothy Thompson, of Florida, and Gretchen Thompson, of Chillicothe, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his five siblings, J.D. Thompson, Manford Thompson, Betty Gibson, Jack Thompson, and infant brother, Willy Thompson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Crestline, with Pastor Diana Seaman officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service, Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Crestline. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Crestline. Full military honors will be given at the graveside by the U.S. Army and the Crestline/Galion Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
