Dr. W. Frederick (Fred) Marshall

Dr. W. Frederick (Fred) Marshall, 81 of Mansfield passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015.

He was born on June 27, 1934, to Catherine and William Marshall (deceased) of Mansfield, Ohio. Fred is survived by his wife Marilou of 59 years, four sons; William (Karen), of Snellville, Georgia. Douglas (Kim and grandchild Daniel), of Lake Blackshear, Georgia. Philip (Shauna and grandchildren Margaux, Kaleigh, Harrison), of Napa, California. Dr. Michael (Dr. Elizabeth and grandchildren Thomas, Benjamin, of New Canaan, Connecticut. Fred is also survived by his sister Sr. Carolyn Marshall HM, of North Olmstead, Ohio, and sister-in-law Patricia (Dr. John and nephews Bill, Ralph niece Gabrielle), of Medina, Ohio.

Dr. Marshall graduated from Mansfield St. Peter’s in 1952, received his Bachelor of Humane Letters from John Carroll University and his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Case Western Reserve University in 1959. He Interned at St Luke’s Hospital in Cleveland before returning to Mansfield in 1960 to start his dental practice. In addition to his private practice, he served as the Dentist for Richland County Children Services and provided service to Mansfield General Hospital, Peoples Hospital and Woodlawn Nursing Center.

Dr. Marshall retired in 2002 after 42 years of practice in Mansfield.

Fred believed deeply in his responsibility to civic, church, youth and professional organizations and was an active member and leader in the community.

Locally, he was a member and past president of the Mansfield Optimist Club, Richland County American Red Cross Board Member, Committee Chairman for United Way of Richland County and Treasurer for EMPAC.

At St. Peter’s, his faith was reflected in his commitment to the parish and school community. He served as a member of the Development Board and was past president of the Parish Council and Serra Club and was inducted into the St. Peter’s Hall of Fame in 2000.

His commitment to youth was seen in his life-long involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. He earned his Eagle rank as a Mansfield Boy Scout and as an adult received the Catholic St George Award and National Silver Beaver Award for leadership. He served as President of the Johnny Appleseed Council, Scoutmaster of St. Peter’s Troop 121 and as a Medical Staff member to the World Jamboree in Fujinomiya — Mount Fuji, Japan. 

Professionally, Fred belonged to Psi Omega Dental Fraternity, was a career member and former officer of the Mansfield and Ohio Dental Societies, the American Dental Association and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Delta Dental of Ohio from 1985 to 1995. He was inducted into the Loyalty Society of Case Western Reserve University, received the Magnus Award from John Carroll University and helped develop the Dental Assistant Certification Course at North Central State College.

Fred cherished his family, church and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him and his spirit to make this world a better place.

Friends may call at Herlihy-Chambers Funeral Home, 173 Park Ave. West, on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. with a vigil service at 3 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Gregory Hite officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery.
