The Shelby Foundation Board of Directors approved $19,507.88 in community grants to local nonprofit organizations at the Oct. 20 meeting.

First Lutheran Church ABC Learning Center received a $1,000 grant to assist with purchasing furniture for their classroom expansion. The grant will be used to purchase educational science tables for school-aged children.

FISH of Shelby received a $4,500 grant for food assistance. FISH provides emergency food assistance to Shelby area residents.

Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio received $5,000 grant for JA programs in Shelby City Schools. JA teaches youth to be successful by using educational programs that focus on workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Teachers who partner with JA receive an experiential in-class learning experience. This grant was funded by the Angela Phillips Donor Advised Fund.

Raemelton Therapeutic Equestrian Center received a $2,000 grant for Auburn Elementary Therapeutic Riding Scholarships. This grant will provide children with disabilities the opportunity to participate in therapeutic horseback riding programs. Therapeutic riding uses the process of learning to ride and the movements of the horse to strengthen primary body control and sequencing.

Shelby Community & Senior Center received a $757.88 grant to purchase commercial tables. Tables are used for rental functions and senior and community activities.

Shelby Salvation Army received a $2,000 grant to purchase pajamas for teens and preteens for their Cozy Christmas for Kids program. The program will provide pajamas for children ages 10 to 18 this holiday season. This grant was funded by the Reynolds Family Memorial Fund.

Shelby Middle School received a $2,500 grant for the annual 6th Grade Camp Nuhop trip. The Camp Nuhop program focuses on academic and interpersonal skills in an outdoor classroom, where students learn from their natural environment. The experiences students receive are focused on realistic, problem solving situations.

Shelby St. Mary’s School received a $1,750 grant for their leveled literacy program for kindergarten students. The program offers sequential, intensive lessons for small group reading instruction and focuses on the needs of struggling readers.

The Shelby Foundation is a nonprofit organization that gives back to Shelby’s community and surrounding areas by providing donors an opportunity to positively impact Shelby’s future. It makes it as easy as possible for people to use their money to help this community.

The foundation awards grant dollars to worthy nonprofit organizations and their programs that improve the lives of Shelby residents. The foundation is dedicated to programs which enhance arts, culture and humanities, improve health, and welfare services. In essence, the Shelby Foundation assists the community where we live, work and love by simply making it better.
