Miles for Meso

MANSFIELD, Ohio – Some events just connect with people in the right way. The Bruce A. Waite Miles for Meso 5K touches lives:  past, present, and future. The event honors former Mansfield City School teacher Bruce Waite through his love of running and his quest for excellence in the lives of everyone he touched.

Bruce died of mesothelioma in 2003. The 5K race, organized by Jill Waite, takes place on Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Ontario High School at 2 p.m. (registration at 1 p.m.) and is chip timed by Ohio Race Day.

Last year, there were 276 registered participants and the race raised $10,000 for mesothelioma research (to Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation). Over the past 3 years, the event raised a total of $26,750.

According to Jill Waite, race director and Bruce’s daughter, “This is the fourth year for the race. What has transpired since 2012 has exceeded any expectation I had.

“Although the race has my dad’s name, it has become a way for others who have lost loves ones to, or presently suffer with, mesothelioma to come for catharsis.”

Waite also added, “To watch this occur over the years is as important as raising money for research. We strive together to ensure that other families do not have to experience what we have. The goal is to eradicate mesothelioma, and being a part of that process is overwhelming and fulfilling. And in so doing, Bruce Waite’s legacy continues.”

The field of runners and walkers is full of former students, family, friends, and those struggling with their own journey, whether that’s just taking the first step to a healthier lifestyle or battling a life-altering disease like mesothelioma.

Popularity of the event continues to grow with registrants from Colorado, Nevada, Texas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and North Carolina already this year.

Nancy Waite, Bruce’s wife, takes her role in hospitality seriously and her efforts are felt by so many surrounding this special event.

This race continues to offer their highly sought after long-sleeve tech shirts for registered participants, but also tosses in some new elements this year. New this year, youth sizes of these favorite shirts. Also new – teams.

People can register together to be eligible for team awards (largest team, most spirit, and best team T-shirt/outfit).

There will also be two quilt raffles.
