MANSFIELD, Ohio–At a special board meeting of the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education on Wednesday afternoon the board approved two contract renewals and introduced a new district principal. They also heard about summer camps.

Superintendent Brian Garverick reviewed camps that are offered through the schools this summer. The camps include a free Third Grade Reading Boot Camp for students who haven’t passed the reading test mandated by the state’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee. The camp, offered from June 15-July 8, hosts approximately 40 students.

There’s also a Summer Math Camp for students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Springmill Learning Center from July 13-17. Math teachers will provide instruction with assitance from Ohio State University students. Lucas students will attend in August.

Three Science Camps for students k-5 will run consecutively. Each camp offers a different theme: Kitchen Chemistry, Newton’s Toy Box, and Critters, Creatures and the Great Outdoors. The cost is $75.

A Kindergarten Readiness camp will be held Aug. 3-7 at the Springmill Learning Center. The camp is free.

There’s also credit recovery classes at the high school.

“I’m glad to hear those reports,” said board President Renda Cline. It’s important that we let the public know what it is that Mansfield City Schools has to offer. And it’s good that things start at kindergarten, especially with us changing things this year with the age requirement being 5-year-olds; and it’s good to see that the teachers are working very diligently to see that they’re prepared as they begin their academic careers.”
