MANSFIELD, Ohio – Main Street Books recently announced a talk on oral history and how to do it yourself. Oral historian and folklorist Chad Edward Buterbaugh will lead a discussion entitled “Oral History from Start to Finish” on Friday, June 12 from 6-8 p.m. in the book loft.
Chad Edward Buterbaugh is a folklorist and Ph.D. candidate studying at Indiana University in Bloomington, and a former newspaper reporter in Medina County and Youghal, County Cork, Ireland. His work focuses on contemporary storytelling traditions in Ireland.
Buterbaugh’s talk will walk the audience through the process of oral history from idea to archive. He will cover the definition of oral history, how people do oral history, who supports oral history projects, and how one archives it.
Also in his talk, Buterbaugh will touch on folklore, the difference between oral and so-called official history, examples of great published oral histories, archives of oral histories, some northern and central Ohio resources for learning more about oral histories, and technological and archival resources for DIY projects.
