MANSFIELD, Ohio–Richland County boasts many talented instrumental music students who spend many hours playing and practicing individually and learning to play as a group with a conductor. Two particular area groups include the Mansfield Symphony Youth Strings, conducted by Matt Domka and the Mansfield Symphony Youth Orchestra, conducted by Randy Heidlebaugh.

Presented here are two galleries of photos of these students, courtesy of Domka Photography, Mansfield.

The Mansfield Symphony Youth Strings is comprised of elementary (4th grade) through junior high (8th grade) students. They perform two concerts at the Renaissance during the school year. These students study their string instrument with a private instructor and must audition to join this group.

The Mansfield Symphony Youth Orchestra is a full instrumental orchestra comprised of high school students. They study their instrument with a private instructor and have to audition to be part of the group. They perform twice during the school year at the Renaissance Theatre, and there are plans this fall for the MSYO (Mansfield Symphony Youth Orchestra) to perform alongside the Mansfield Symphony conducted by Thomas Hong.

Students from Mansfield Senior and Lexington High School participate as part of their school’s marching band program and/or the orchestra program in their school.

Music enhances learning, and fortunately these schools still offer an extensive music education at the public school level.

Participating school directors include Orchestra Director at Lexington High School, Stephen Domka; band directors at Lexington Local School, Kevin Taylor and Rick Ruth; Orchestra Director at Mansfield Senior High, Alicia Tremmel; and band directors at Mansfield Senior High, Jeff Freytag and Charles Bradley II.

Note: The galleries at right are not the entire group from either school, but the images povided with parental permission. (Photos by Domka Photography)
