Oscar Mathews, 94, of Mansfield, died May 19, 2015. Born January 2, 1921 in Brownsville, TN, he was the son of Oscar Sr. and Patsy (Powell) Mathews. A caring father, Oscar instilled the value of integrity and honesty in his children and was a very trustworthy man. He worked construction and later retired from the railroad. In his free time, Oscar enjoyed fishing, hunting, and vegetable gardening and he was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his daughters, Elizabeth Mack of Mansfield, Lavonda Kaye (Richard) Isby of Maumee, Rosie Mathews Powell of California, and Nadine Miller of Mansfield; sons, Tyrone (Diane) Mathews Sr. of Mansfield, Kenneth E. Mathews of Lima, Larry J. (Maryanne) Mathews of Mansfield, Robert L. (Joyce) Mathews of California, Thomas L. Mathews of Mansfield, Curtis (Connie) Mathews of Petersburg, VA, and Anthony Mathews of Mansfield; thirty grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-grandchild; brother, Harrison Matthews of Mansfield; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Along with his parents, Oscar was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Velma Jones-Mathews; son, Audie Mathews; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; son-in-law, Frank Miller; daughter-in-law, Katsie Mathews; brothers, Ollie Joe, Rudell, Albert, Charlie, and George Mathews; and sisters, Pearline, Etta, and Edna.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 112 West 6th Street, Mansfield, conducted by Dr. Thomas C. Hunt. Family and friends are invited to visit for one hour prior to the service, from 10-11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Oscar’s daughter, Nadine Miller, up until the date of service, at 386 Linda Lane, Mansfield, OH 44907.
