Betty Jean Hicks

MANSFIELD: Betty Jean Hicks, loving mother and grandmother, entered her heavenly home Thursday, May 21, 2015 in Mifflin Care Center in Mansfield. She was 81.

She was born November 14, 1933 to parents Daunt & Roxie (Hutcheson) Waugh in Ashland, KY. On August 17, 1950, at only 16 years old she married the love of her life, Bill Hicks. They shared 47 wonderful years of marriage until he passed away in 1997. They are together again.

Betty worked diligently to create a loving home for her husband and five boys. She was a phenomenal cook and made unforgettable apple pies, biscuits & gravy, fudge, and chicken. Betty had a song for everything. She loved to sing country and gospel music and her favorite nights were spent sitting around the table with her family as they sang and harmonized.

She was a faithful member of Mansfield Church of God on Stewart Road. Betty’s family and friends will miss her independent personality and how much she loved to laugh.

She is survived by four sons and five daughters-in-law: Pam Hicks of Mansfield, Steve & Betty Hicks of Tiro, John & Sandy Hicks of Ashland, Tim & Cheryl Hicks of Mansfield, and Terry & Lisa Hicks of Mansfield; eleven grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Rocky & Margie Waugh of Greenup, KY, and Randy & Debbie Waugh of Louisa, KY; two sisters: Mary & Larry Grizzel of Flat Woods, KY, and Peggy & Bill Gollihue of Mansfield; a sister-in-law Betty Hicks; best friend and prayer partner Carolyn “Cookie” Riley; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her eldest son Billy E. Hicks; and four siblings: Jack Waugh, Daunt Waugh, Jr., Margaret Waller, and Clifford Jackson.

Her family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2015 in the Mansfield Stewart Road Church of God (1425 N. Stewart Rd in Mansfield) where a funeral service celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Pastor Samuel Wright will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory to Mansfield Stewart Road Church of God may be made at her services.
