MANSFIELD, Ohio–In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Sergeant Scott Kotterman attends the event yearly as a representative for the Richland County Sheriff’s Office. Attending with him this year were Mansfield Police Officers Cory Kaufman and Nelson Kilgore. Also attending with Kotterman and MPD officers is Acting Sergeant Constable Chris Harvey from the London Metropolitan Police Department. He has been attending the ceremony for several years with the officers.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Office recognized Police Week which is this week. Deputies’ spouses and families showed their support for the event by providing food, snacks and decorating the patrol bureau. Lucas Elementary fifth grade, Mrs. Messner’s,

Bucyrus Pre-School kindergarten and Central Elementary Lexington Schools sent the officers colored pictures with comments thanking deputies for their service.

Twenty-Seven (27) area business and restaurants donated food and other services to the deputies in appreciation for their dedication and commitment to the safety of citizens in Richland County.

National Police Week draws in between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees. The attendees come from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies throughout the world. This provides a unique opportunity to meet others that share a common brotherhood. These events are open to all law enforcement personnel and are an experience unlike any other.
