The 9th Annual Shelby Cancer Rally kicks off on Sunday, May 17 on the Central School playground in Shelby. The first rally in 2007 was attended by approximately 100 participants and raised $1,100. The first eight rallies have raised over $112,000 to help people affected by cancer.
“So many people right here in Shelby receive their world-class cancer care at The James Cancer Hospital that we felt we wanted to support the research that is on-going there,” agreed rally chairs Jack Gray and Dave Spangler, both retired Shelby teachers and both cancer survivors.
During their teaching careers these men always stressed the importance of giving back to your community in their classrooms. Their work with the Shelby Cancer Rally is their way of giving back by helping to support people that are going through a cancer journey.
The rally includes guest speakers, a 5k Family Fun Run/Walk, a 6-mile Family Fun Rally and throughout the summer for a $500 Meijer Gift Card and a $100 Cornell’s IGA gift card.
More information can be found at www.shelbysupportslivestrong.org.
Registration forms can be found on the web page and will be available at the rally.
Registration is $15 and includes a rally tee shirt. Shirts will also be for sale to anyone not running, walking or riding.
The event celebrates all cancer survivors in our lives and remembers all those who ran out of time on their journey.
Registration and an auction begin at 1 p.m. and the rally begins at 2 p.m.
Some of the silent auction items include a collectors edition Ohio State NCAA Championship Football, tickets to an Ohio State Football game, many autographed items from the Cavs, Browns, Bluejackets, and Indy Car Racing, a Survivors Quilt and Baby Quilt both handmade, framed art work, tickets to many professional sports games and attractions all over Ohio, a golf package, gift cards to many restaurants in Shelby, Mansfield and Columbus, gift cards from local businesses and many, many more items. For all the golfers we have a package at Muirfield Country Club, and 18 holes with cart for three individuals playing with Shelby graduate Doug Peebles.
All funds raised will be donated to the LiveStrong Foundation, a national nonprofit that helps people affected by cancer both at the local level and nationally, and funds will also be donated to Pelotonia, a Columbus based nonprofit cycling event that supports research at The James Cancer Hospital in Columbus.
