SHELBY, Ohio- The arena at Pioneer Career and Technology Center was packed with excited Pioneer students and proud family members on Thursday, April 30, for the annual honors night. During the event, students were recognized for achieving, performing and succeeding at extraordinary levels.
Scholarships were awarded to many students for continuing education with the total amount at $595,704. Pioneer also announced 286 special awards presented to 186 Pioneer students.
A major highlight of the evening was the announcement of this year’s Byron H. Carmean Award winner, Ingrid Schmidt, an Ontario High School senior. Schmidt has excelled in the Performing Arts program with instructor Anne Kurtzman.
The Carmean Award is the highest award given to a Pioneer student and was created to recognize students with outstanding qualities of character, personal dedication and service to education. This year Schmidt was also Pioneer’s Senior Nominee for the Franklin B. Walter Scholarship Award and the November Student of the Month.
In addition to Schmidt’s classroom success, she is a tremendous performer. She has been active with The Melody Within since 2013. From 2013-2015 she performed in the Renaissance Youth Theatre; performing in Improv classes, “Tarzan” and “Hairspray Jr.” She has taken Scene Study classes at the Richland Academy of Arts and Tap classes at Converse College’s Lawson Academy. Schmidt also teaches Tap Dance classes and volunteers at the Humane Society.
Ingrid plans to attend Ashland University in the fall to receive her Bachelor’s Degree Theatre and minor in Marketing. By having a career in the Performing Arts, Ingrid hopes to inspire others to follow their dreams not only in the Arts, but with whatever goals they have set for themselves.
