Tempest Tossed

MANSFIELD, Ohio – The Mansfield Symphony is partnering with A Moveable Feast Supper Club, the Mansfield-based pop-up fine dining movement led by Susan Vander Maas and chef Rasul Welch, to present an unforgettable night out at the Renaissance Theatre. A limited number of dinner package tickets are available for an upscale five-course meal in the upper lobby of the Renaissance, followed by an impressive concert featuring violinist Anne Ku and the works of Berlioz, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky in its season finale concert on May 2, “Tempest Tossed.”

The five-course farm-to-table dinner prepared by A Moveable Feast Supper Club will begin at 6 p.m. in the upper lobby of the Renaissance, starting with charcuterie and crudités, followed by a smoked trout terrine with micro greens, daylilly and cattail shoots, radish, and pickled mustard seed. Next, guests will enjoy a spring soup of chicken confit with seared ramps, chanterelles, and dashi broth served with crusty bread. The fourth course will be kombu cured pork, followed by strawberry shortcake for dessert.

“Tempest Tossed,” the season finale for the Mansfield Symphony, will feature Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s “Violin Concerto” played by Juilliard graduate Anne Ku, and Berlioz’s “Roman Carnival Overture.”

Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Wei-Heng Anne Ku has been playing violin since the age of eight. She has received numerous prizes and honors, including First Prize in the Temple University Preparatory Concerto Competition, the American Fine Arts Festival Bach Concerto Competition, and the South Orange Symphony Young Artists Competition.

Maestro Thomas Hong commented, “Talented rising star Anne Ku will join us on this concert, playing one of the most beloved concertos of all time – the Tchaikovsky ‘Violin Concerto.’ This work promises to blow our audiences away with its technical brilliance and wizardry as well as all of the soulful melodies as only Tchaikovsky can write.

“Our second half of the program consists of the monumental Symphony no. 5 of the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. This symphony continues the tradition of ‘the great fifth symphonies’ perpetuated by Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. The Russian composer’s work is equally grandiose and epic in symphonic magnitude. Dark, mysterious at times, the music also focuses on patriotic styles, which may resonate with our listeners as the Memorial holiday approaches. This is a work that’s profoundly deep and meaningful, like a great Dostoevsky novel.”

Package tickets for dinner and the concert range from $64 to $69 dependent upon seat selection; tickets for the concert only are $38, $33 and $28, and are on sale at the Renaissance Box Office, 419-522-2726, and online all the time at www.mansfieldtickets.com. All regular ticketing fees apply. The Renaissance is also pleased to continue their $15 ticket offer for this event. These seats, located in the back two rows of the balcony, may be purchased in person only, beginning two hours prior to the performance at the Renaissance Box Office, cash preferred. Tempest Tossed is part of the Graham Automall 2014-2015 Renaissance Season, presented with support from the Ohio Arts Council.

Concertgoers are also invited to attend a post-concert meet & greet with Music Director Thomas Hong, violinist Anne Ku, and musicians from the Mansfield Symphony.
