Emanuel Jacob Congregation will hold a Holocaust Memorial service (Yom Hashoah) to remember and help others learn about a time in history that warrants reflection. The interfaith service is today at 3 p.m.

For nearly 20 years, Emanuel Jacob Congregation has held this service. It has always been more than just an event for the Mansfield Jewish community. Also participating are area religious leaders, as well as local government officials. It is an event for the entire community and everyone is invited to attend. The service includes readings, prayers, and music.

The speaker this year is Dr. Yoram Eckstein. Yoram and his parents were exiled by the Russians under Stalin to a detention camp in Siberia. Their oppressors drove them across Eastern Europe, subjecting them to horrors parallel to the situation of the other Jews of Europe. Dr. Eckstein’s saga provides a view of the plight of the Jews from the perspective of the Russian side of Europe.

The full name of the day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust is “Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah”— in Hebrew literally translated as the “Day of (remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism.”

The service will be held at 973 Larchwood Road.
