PLYMOUTH, Ohio–Plymouth High School’s National Honor Society is hosting their 2nd annual 5K on Saturday, April 25. The race starts at 10 a.m. at the Plymouth firehouse.
Participants are required to donate at least two items to the Plymouth-Shiloh Food Pantry, and the students are hosting a Food Drive at the High School beginning April 13 leading up to the day of the race. Their goal is to be able to be able to provide over 100 meals to community members in need.
“It would surprise you what we need the most,” said Rose Jaeckin, of the Plymouth-Shiloh Food Pantry, an affiliate of Second Harvest Food Bank. Some of the items listed as most needed were corn muffin mix, cake mix, canned tuna, Jell-o, Ramen noodles, boxed mac and cheese, shampoo, bar soap and toilet paper.
Runners will have the opportunity to have their time kept for them, but the race is family-friendly and open to anyone who wants to support the cause.
“It’s nice to see the students engaging with the community,” says PHS National Honor Society Adviser Brittany Noble Charek. “Not only are our NHS kids smart, but a lot of them are athletes, too. This seemed like a good opportunity for them to encourage others to lead a healthy lifestyle and bring attention to big issues.”
“This 5K is a great way for us to draw attention to the issue of hunger,” says PHS National Honor Society President Madison Minich. “It’s also a way to promote our local National Honor Society chapter and show off what we can do to help our community.”
The cost is $15 plus two items to donate to the Plymouth-Shiloh Food Pantry if participants register before April 4. After that, participants can still register up until the day of the event, but the cost will be $20 and they are not guaranteed a t-shirt (although they will most likely receive one).
Proceeds from the race will benefit PHS’s National Honor Society so that students can continue to seek out more service projects and leadership opportunities.
Supporters can follow the event with #outrunhunger.
