Grescilda Hill

SHELBY: Grescilda Ruth Hill, age 93, of Shelby, passed away Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015 in Crestwood Care Center with her daughter by her side.

She was born Oct. 20, 1921 in Petersburg, WV, the daughter of McKinley & Nellie (Keplinger) Morris.  After high school, Grescilda went to nursing school, eventually earning her Bachelor’s degree in nursing from Case Western Reserve and her Master’s degree in nursing from Loma Linda University. She spent her career as a nursing professor, teaching nursing students. She believed strongly in education and obtained advanced degrees in an era when it was less common for women to have advanced education.

Grescilda was proud to serve her country as a nurse in the US Army during two tours of duty, at the end of WWII and again during the Korean conflict.

On July 27, 1958 she married Vernon Hill and together they spent 56 years loving their family and working with the youth of their church.

Her passions were her family and working with Pathfinders, the youth group in her church. She was a selfless, loving, and giving person who doted on her family. She will be missed immeasurably.

She was a member of the Mansfield Seventh-day Adventist Church and of Women in the Military. She also enjoyed collecting sand and seashells from all over the world, travel, camping, and continually learning new things and having new adventures.

She is survived by her husband Vernon Hill of Shelby; daughter Patti and son-in-law Larry Clayburn of Shelby; three adored grandchildren: Amie (Clayburn) Siemens (Nick) of Cheyenne, WY; Erica Clayburn of Hawthorne, NJ, and Adam (Elizabeth) Clayburn of Shelby; three beloved great-grandchildren, Haley Clement, and David and Amelia Clayburn; and siblings Harold (Geraldine) Morris of Flintstone, MD, and Dwight (Mary) Morris of Flintstone, MD.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings Cora Morris Shanholtz, Ulysses Morris, Dwayne Morris, and Arvella Morris.

A memorial and celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. at the Mansfield Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1040 W. Cook Road in Mansfield, Ohio, officiated by Pastor Larry Grahn and Pastor Edward Marton.

Memorial contributions to the Mansfield Pathfinder Club in care of the Mansfield SDA church may be made at the service.
