Thelma Irene Bazley passed away late Sunday evening, January 4, 2015 in her Lexington home surrounded by her family. She was 82.
She was born June 3, 1932 to parents Russell & Ethel (Steigerwalt) Shoup in Mansfield. After Thelma was graduated from Mansfield Sr. High, she worked at Neisner’s lunch counter on Main Street. A certain young man named Cecil Bazley began eating his lunch there every day and soon asked her for a date. He showed up with eleven red roses and one yellow one. On the second date there were two yellow roses and so on until all the roses were yellow. The pair married October 26, 1950 and the yellow roses became a tradition.
It’s no surprise that Thelma was an expert gardener. She even won an award for her garden and enjoyed working in it so much that she didn’t stop when health problems arose over the past year. She always remembered to keep sugar water in her hummingbird feeders. But above all, Thelma cherished time spent with her grandkids and her dog, Buddy.
She worked as a line supervisor at Therm-O-Disc where she worked for over 28 years until her retirement. In spare time, she enjoyed going for car rides (even just around town), traveling all over the world (with favorites like Nova Scotia, Mexico, and the Caribbean), and sailing with her husband (usually on Charles Mill Lake or Lake Erie).
Thelma was a member of the Mansfield Sail & Power Squadron and an honorary member of the Mohican Sailing Club.
She is survived by her loving husband Cecil Bazley of Lexington; four children (& spouses): Vickie & Paul Picking of Mansfield, Cecil Trent & Margo Bazley of Oceanside, CA, Brian & Laurie Bazley of Mansfield, and Terry & Kathy Bazley of Reynoldsburg; eleven grandchildren: Heather, Robert, Adam, Cecil Scott, Shannon, Shaina, Garrett, Gavyn, Gabriella, Madeline, and Julia; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and close friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three siblings: Howard Shoup, Naomi Pollock, and Robert Shoup.
Her family will receive friends 4-7 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015 in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service honoring her life will be held Friday at 12 noon with Pastor Chris Durbin officiating.
Contributions in her memory to Mohican Sailing Club may be made at the funeral home.
