John Ogle Ginder, 96, of Galion passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 after a period of declining health. He was born on May 22, 1918 in Marion, Ohio.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Leona (Bell) Ginder, brothers William, Walter Jr., Richard, and Robert, and son Steven Cole.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Eileen (Hoffman) Ginder; brother Jim Ginder and sister-in-law Nancy Ginder of Kingsport, TN; sisters Ann Ginder of Galion and Mary Jean (Ginder) Studer and brother-in-law Roger Studer of Dayton; son John M. and daughter-in-law Jill (Flick) Ginder of Plymouth, MI; daughter Lucinda (Cole) Marino of Galion; granddaughter Tonya (Marino) McAdams and grandson-in-law Tracy McAdams of Bucyrus; grandsons Nic Marino of Galion and Jared and Jordan Ginder of Plymouth, MI; great-grandchildren Sophie and Emma McAdams of Bucyrus and Dominic Marino of Galion and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A 1936 graduate of Galion High School, John worked in the family grocery in Galion and at Willo’dell Nursery in Ashland, was a conductor on the Erie Railroad, and joined the US Army in 1944, serving in the 27th Infantry Regiment “Wolfhounds” of the 25th Infantry Division in the Philippines during World War II and in occupied Japan after the War. After an honorable discharge in 1946, he delivered mail for the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired in 1979.
John was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Galion Elks Club, the American Legion, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol Auxiliary. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was a fan of Galion High School and The Ohio State University sports. He had a voracious appetite for learning and reading, enjoyed travel and, no matter where he was, seemed never to be lost. Among his travels in retirement was a boat trip with friends that took them from Long Island to Lake Ontario via New York Harbor, the Hudson River, and the Erie Canal. Recently John remarked to Eileen that “I’ve had a good life. I’ve had a lot of fun!”
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Snyder Funeral Home Richardson Davis Chapel, 218 South Market St. Galion, Ohio 44833 where services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, December 13, with Rev. Joe Stafford officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to HomeCare Matters Hospice in care of the funeral home.
Full military honors will be conducted by the United States Army and Galion/ Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
