Glenn Carter was awarded the 70 year Veteran Award for service to the Boy Scouts of America at a reception at the Mansfield Moose Lodge in Mansfield Thursday, Oct. 2. Carter currently serves as a Unit Commissioner for Cub Pack 506 and Boy Scout Troop 586 in Ashland which are part of the Johnny Appleseed Trail District.
Johnny Appleseed Trail District Commissioner Dale Fortney stated, “Glenn Carter started in Boy Scouts during World War II when he had to make his own tents, backpacks and camping gear due to shortages caused by the war. He is a shining example of the Boy Scout values from the 1940s up to the present day. Glenn Carter lives the Scout Law and Scout Oath. He is revered by the adults and boys alike. He faithfully attends Scout meetings and still teaches scouting skills to the boys.”
Carter has served in various positions in the Boy Scouts since, such as Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, Explorer Advisor, Cub Leader, Unit Commissioner and Committee Chairman at the Troop, Pack and District levels (resume upon request). He has been awarded the Wood Badge, Arrowhead Honor, Commissioner’s Scouters’ Key, Silver Beaver, Distinguished Commissioner Award, Methodist Cross and Flame Award, Johnny Appleseed District Volunteer Award (2), and an Honorary Doctorate for Lifetime Achievement in Scouting Education.
He joined Boy Scout Troop 214 in Berea, Ohio in April, 1942. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout in March 1946, subsequently earning the Bronze, Gold and Silver Palms. He also attained the top rank of Ranger in the Boy Scout Explorers program in 1949.
Carter graduated from Baldwin Wallace College and the Carnegie Technical Institute with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. He retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation where he worked for nearly 40 years. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army where he was a surveyor in the Field Artillery of the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY.
Carter lives with his wife, Sue, in Ashland.
The Johnny Appleseed Trail District covers Ashland and Richland County along with the cities of Galion and Crestline in Crawford County.
