A collaborative partnership between Friendly House, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Mansfield Richland County Public Library, is bringing the art of comic strips, short fiction & animation to Mansfield/Richland youth.
This new outreach program, through DOJO Comics of downtown Mansfield, is the result of the summer small grants program from North End Community Involvement Collaborative (NECIC)and grant-matching sponsorship by Mechanics Bank.
Students of Friendly House and Big Brothers Big Sisters will create original comic strips and storylines, and be published and showcased in a film production at the Library this Fall 2014.
Press are invited to interview students, and are welcome to take photography and video.
‘Friendly Funnies’ will coincide with the final week of the ‘Summer Fun Program’.
Classes will be hosted at Friendly House on Monday Aug. 4, and on Thursday Aug. 7.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters Publication” is free and open to the public, and is being hosted in the Community Room at the Mansfield Library on Wednesdays and Thursdays, this August.
This program begins Wednesday Aug. 6 and is running until Thursday Aug. 28. Any young individual, regardless of age or skill level, may attend for free. Once the program is complete, students of all organizations will receive one publication at no cost, and be invited to the showcase at newly expanded Teen section of the Mansfield Library.
DOJO Comics is lead by mentor and instructor Luke Beekman. Partnered with Main Street Books Mansfield, the local endeavor has brought original series driven by creative youth.
