The Crawford Park District’s programming at Lowe-Volk Park and Nature Center near Crestline is in full swing. Here is what’s on tap there between now and the end of July:

Youth Fishing Derby — Saturday, June 14, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Join volunteer Rob Farson for a great morning of family fishing. Kids who are between 5 and 12 years old can enjoy this outdoor activity at Lowe-Volk pond and receive a gift bag of goodies. Prizes will be awarded in three age groups. Bluegill, bass, and catfish can be hooked and returned to the pond. Make it a family event!

The Mighty Mason Bee — Thursday, June 19, 7 p.m.

Native bees are an under-appreciated group of important pollinators. The mason bee is a native bee and is so adept at pollinating fruit trees that it is also called the orchard bee. Unlike honeybees that live in colonies, the mason bee is sociable, but lives a solitary life. Mason bees use mud to build encasements around single eggs. Come find out how homeowners are placing artificial nests on their property to encourage this nonstinging beneficial pollinator to reproduce and improve the environment.

Nature’s Incubators: Bird Nests — Monday, June 23, 6 p.m.

Come and see some of the special nests that birds make to incubate their eggs and to raise their rapidly growing young. The nest styles vary as much as the bird species that build them. If you’re lucky, one of our bluebird boxes may have some eggs or young. Whatever the case, with Joy Etter-Link, you can count on an informative and fun program. All kids through grade five are welcome.

Archeology Dig — Saturday, June 28, 9 a.m.

Meet at Lowe-Volk Park

Viewing the Night Sky — Saturday, June 28, 9:30 p.m.

Join members of the Richland Astronomical Society and CPD volunteers as they share their knowledge and telescope skills with all who are interested in the celestial sights. Bring your own telescope or allow the volunteers to assist you with those provided. It is a spectacular universe.

Color Me Camo — Saturday, July 12, Noon to 3 p.m.

Wear your camo, if you like, and come to Lowe-Volk Park. You’ll see Ohio Air National Guard members from the 179th Airlift Wing which is headquartered at Mansfield Lahm Airport. They’ll be in camo and will be bringing some Guard equipment to view including a truck and a humvee. Animals have many camo strategies of their own. There will be a “Camo Hike” in the woods which will focus on the nature aspects of camouflage. Dave Dotson…balloon tying….This will be a terrific family event. Bring Grandma and Grandpa too! Maybe they will want to have their faces painted?

Walk and Woof — Wednesday, July 16, 6 p.m.

Dogs love nature too. Join Josh and Carley for a leisure summer’s eve stroll. After the hike, we’ll cool the doggies off with a fetch and swim! All ages and breed welcome.
