The United Way of Richland County will be hosting its Third Annual Power of the Purse Event at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center.

“This event has become a signature event to raise funds for United Way,” said April Hedrick, Community Outreach Coordinator at the United Way. “This event has been very successful the past two years bringing in over $15,000 and it continues to grow each year. Last year we needed 25 tables for guests and this year we are planning on 40 tables.”

The event focus is on a live auction of designer, lady handbags as well as a silent auction with a variety of items from gift cards to local restaurants to jewelry. This year there will be even more items up for bid and the live auction features local men as models. The event will be catered by Ed Picken’s and will have a cash bar.

“A portion of the proceeds of this event goes to fund our Big Red Bookshelf project,” said Hedrick. “This project provides gently-used or new books to children from birth to third grade. The donated books are located on bright red shelves located at community sites where young children visit. The children can take books for free to keep that their home. We currently have six bookshelves in the community and have given out over 4,000 books.”

Tickets for the event are $20. A small amount will be available at the door the night of the event.
