The Shabby Rose opened its doors to the antique and refurbished furniture lovers on Friday morning. There to cut the ribbon were guests, councilman Phil Scott and the Sandra Pate and Kim Heenan who own the store.
Pate and Heenan previously owned an antique store. When they saw the opportunity to open at 29 N. Main St. (right across the street from Cafe on Main), they seized it.
“We had some stuff left over from our other shop,” said Pate. “This (opening of The Shabby Rose) means everything to us. It is the accumulation of a dream and a vision,” she added.
The shop is unique because it does not just sell antique furniture. They also refurbish, paint and re-design old furniture they find at garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores and dumpsters–yes, dumpsters.
“I’ve done my fair share of dumpster diving. Diving is the best … The old adage really is true, another man’s trash is another’s garbage. We see it in a totally different way,” said Heenan.
In addition to the occasional dumpster dive and flea market spree, they also focus some of their attention on purses, jewelry and lingerie. According to the pamphlet, found at the store’s front desk, “For the girl in all of us we also carry vintage purses and lingerie, and a multitude of old-made-new-again jewelry.”
They take pride in the fact that their purses are hand crafted. They even guarantee that you won’t find the same purse on the arm of another woman.
The owners also intend to run public workshops that will teach others how to tackle renovation projects. They will teach painting techniques and other tricks of the trade when it comes to re-purposing antique furniture.
The store is now open. To see some of their products, visit their store at 29 N. Main St. in downtown Mansfield. For more information, call 419-564-3614.
