COLUMBUS—State Representative Mark Romanchuk (R-Ontario) recently announced that a national award for lightweight metal manufacturing innovation will be coming to Ohio and Michigan.
The White House named Columbus-based Edison Welding Institute (EWI), which last year partnered with The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan, as one of two private-public partnerships to encourage creating manufacturing jobs. The EWI team was one of three teams nationally to submit a proposal.
In response to the Department of Defense wanting to establish an institute for “lightweight and modern metals manufacturing innovation,” Romanchuk sponsored House Concurrent Resolution 33, which urged the department to award funding to establish the American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute.
“I am so pleased that the White House chose Edison Welding Institute (EWI) as one of the two innovation institutes being established this year,” Romanchuk said. “There will be many benefits for Richland County and manufacturers all over the country. I am excited to see the positive impact on our communities over the next few years.”
The institute will be headquartered in southeast Michigan and will have significant efforts in technology transitioning and workforce development in central Ohio.
