Every Friday night brings some upsets and some blowouts and we had some each and some good games too on the foundation week, week nine of the high school football season.
Ohio Cardinal Conference
Mansfield Senior sewed up a share of the Ohio Cardinal Conference title with a (44-7) thumping of Lexington on Friday night. Five different players scored as the Tygers improved to 9-0 for the first time in their 114 year history. “We played a pretty darn good football game,” said Senior High coach Chioke Bradley.
The only other team with a chance to get a piece of the title is Ashland, who beat Madison (42-0) behind three touchdown passed from Nick Zurcher. Ashland plays Lexington next week, while the Tygers play Madison.
Clear Fork held Orrville to less than 30 yards rushing and they beat the Red Riders (35-7) to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. “I’m really proud of our defense. Their goal was to a get a shutout (Friday). They were very close. I think Orrville scored on their second series. They only had 34 rushing yards. We pride ourselves in stopping the run,” said coach Dave Carroll.
With a late TD Wooster upset West Holmes (41-34), both are now 3-3 in the “OCC.” “We are in a phase of learning how to not lose. I think we really took a step forward in that (Friday),” said Wooster coach Doug Haas.
Firelands Conference
There are a lot of good teams in the Firelands Conference, but Norwalk St. Paul is the only really good one. They outscored Mapleton 28-0 in the second half and buried the Mounties league title hopes (42-13) on Friday.
“There was a lot on the line, conference title implications, playoff points, we were ready to play,” said St. Paul coach John Livengood. The Flyers wrapped up no less than a share of the conference title.
They lead Western Reserve by one. The Rough Riders beat South Central (56-8) last night. Plymouth missed a field goal with two seconds left and New London beat them (27-26) in a thriller.
“At that point you are screaming and yelling and everything is on the line,” said New London coach Justin Vorhies.
Crestview blasted Monroeville (44-0) behind two scores from Grant Faulk.
