Zella Fay Metz passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a long illness. She was 76.

Born February 23, 1937 in Bell County, Kentucky, she was the daughter of George and Lennie (Owens) Davis.

While serving as a waitress at Art’s Lunch in Mansfield, she caught the eye of a young man who frequented her section. Her knight, too shy to initiate conversation, Zella had to take matters into her own hands. She discretely made the first move by giving him free cheeseburgers, a sure sign that she enjoyed his company. At the ages eighteen and nineteen (by use of a white lie) she married Donald Metz on July 7, 1955 in Columbia City, Indiana.

A self declared “domestic engineer”, she devoted her time to creating a wonderful home for her husband and children. She was a selfless mother, wife and friend, always putting others first.

Zella was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 25 years. There she kept many friends, her brothers and sisters in Christ.

Though she enjoyed bowling and watching car races, her true joy was found in spending time with her family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Patricia Metz and Philip Rhodes of Mt. Vernon, son and daughter-in-law Don, Jr. and Louri Metz of Lexington, son Ken Metz of Ontario; six grandchildren Julie, Michael, Donald, III, Bradley, Ryan and Tyler; a great grandson Michael, special niece Deborah Littleton and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Mitzi Kay Metz, at infancy, and three siblings Donna Cottrell, Lavena Partin, and Ted Davis.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2013 in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where her service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. Longtime family friend William Amore and Pastor Paul Matthewson will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
