After experiencing a growing season last year, the girls’ soccer team at St. Peter’s High School hopes to make improvements out on the field this season.
In an effort to gain enough members for a team last year, the team sought participation from those who had never played soccer before. Coach Mayo Kuac stated, “Some of the girls who played softball helped us out to give us higher numbers.” He added, “And those girls are now making big contributions, so while last year was a learning season, we’re hoping to build on that this year.”
Kuac commended Megan McCarrick and Becca Kleman, returning seniors, who took on the responsibility to help those who were struggling to learn some of the soccer concepts and skills last year
“One of the things the girls told me was that they didn’t want to call the season off. They wanted to hang in there and help the athletes who didn’t really know what they were doing. Their patience really showed to the rest of the team, and they will lead the girls as team captains this year,” he stated.
Captian Becca Kleman said, “I’m excited to help build up the new freshmen by helping them develop their soccer skills that they’ll use for all four years.”
Fellow captain Megan McCarrick added, “I’m looking forward to enjoying my last soccer season with all of these amazing girls and ending on a positive note through all of the hard work that we’re putting in.”
The team is still experiencing some growing pains, as they lack a junior varsity team. However, there are about 10 returning starters along with some freshmen, whom Coach Kuac said “will make great additions to the team.”
Among the underclassmen looking to make an impression out on the field are Emily Yeager, Autumn Scodova, and Caroline Blunk. The coach said that Blunk, a defender, has All-Ohio potential.
During the summer, the team participated in the Adidas Showcase. Kuac stated, “They did well. We had just enough girls to play because some of the girls were on vacation.”
This is Kuac’s second year as the girls’ soccer coach. His main desire for the team is to work hard. “Winning isn’t everything. I’m hoping to encourage the girls to work hard to get results.”
“I’m looking forward to enjoying my last soccer season with all of these amazing girls and ending on a positive note through all of the hard work that we’re putting in,” said co-captain Megan McCarrick.
