Harold Robinson passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013 in his residence at Primrose Retirement Community. He was 91.
Born in Lexington on March 12, 1922, he was the son of Clark L. and Lucille (Garber) Robinson. He was graduated co-valedictorian of Lexington High School class of 1940, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Journalism from The Ohio State University. He was later awarded the first master’s degree given in Journalism by Ohio State.
On September 3, 1949, he married Lura E. Brown, whom he met while working at WMAN. She preceded him in death October 5, 1993.
Harold began teaching in Bellville and Galion schools, but spent most of his 30 year career teaching English and Journalism at Mansfield Senior High. He retired in 1979.
He was an avid collector of stamps and Royal Doulton character jugs and enjoyed reading and solving jigsaw puzzles. Harold was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, elder, choir member and usher. In younger years, he was a member of the OSU Marching Band, Glee Club, Alpha Sigma Phi, and Sphinx Club, and was the editor of The Ohio State Lantern. He was a member of the first Lexington Boy Scout Troop and earned the title Eagle Scout in 1940 (also attending the first Scout Jamboree in Wash. DC). Recently, he served as Grand Marshal of the Blueberry Festival, when it celebrated 100 years of Scouting and the 75th anniversary of Lexington’s first Troop.
He is survived by two children, Dr. David Robinson of Athens, GA, and Amy (James) Collins of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Rebecca (John) Nixon of Burlington, NC, and Jeffrey (Jamie) Collins of Wooster; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Nixon, Grant Nixon, Lucas Collins, and Kendall Collins; and one sister, Marie Jackson of Mansfield.
His family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013 in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a service will be held immediately following at 11. The Rev. Dr. David Hartzfeld will officiate and a private burial will be held in Union Cemetery, Columbus.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Harold’s memory to First Presbyterian Church or Boy Scouts may be made at the funeral home.
