Mansfield City Schools Superintendent Brian Garverick discussed programs and facilities which stimulate student achievement during an address to the Mansfield Rotary Club on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
“Student achievement is the No. 1 stated priority of the board of education,” Garverick said.
He cited the district’s ongoing partnership with Ohio State University in Columbus to integrate the Literacy Collaborative approach to how children learn to read and write. He also noted the district’s partnerships with Ashland University for Reading Recovery, which provides one-on-one intervention with at-risk first-graders, and The Algebra Project, a national non-profit math initiative which helps students develop critical thinking skills.
Garverick discussed the continuing development of Springmill Learning Center, the district’s hands-on science and math discovery facility, and the Spanish Immersion School.
He outlined a developing scholarship program with OSU-Mansfield and family engagement initiatives at Senior High in partnership with the local campus. Mansfield City Schools also has a strong relationship with North Central State College’s Urban Center in downtown Mansfield.
“Many of our high school students are able to earn college credit before graduation through our dual enrollment program with NCSC,” Garverick said.
Board of education member Lowell Smith also spoke to Rotarians. He detailed the district’s “Grow Your Own” program, which stimulates students toward teaching careers, and discussed plans for the scholarship partnership with OSU-Mansfield supported by contributions from Senior High and Malabar High School alumni.
