On Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 p.m., the Shelby Police Department received a call from Broadway Automotive and Exhaust on 211 North Gamble Street, stating that the remains of an infant had been discovered in the trunk of a car.

“The car had been brought in for repairs. There was an odor that was coming from the car and they thought it might have been from an animal that had died in the car. The trunk was searched and a box was discovered. It was determined that was where the odor was coming from. Once the box was uncovered, the remains of the infant were found,” said Shelby Police Chief Charlie Roub.

Roub said, “Captain Lance Combs performed the interview with the 17 year old girl. She is from the Mansfield-Madison area. She said it was her baby and that she gave birth in late January or early February, but couldn’t remember exactly when. She gave birth to the child at home and she said she did not know she was pregnant when she gave birth.”

Roub said, “She didn’t deny that the baby was her own and she was very cooperative.” More details will be released following the the coroner’s report and autopsy. The autopsy will be performed in Summit County.

The body was identified as that of a girl.
