MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Division of Police would like to make residents aware of an increase in “check washing” incidents.
What is check washing?
Criminals steal mailed checks and use chemicals to “wash” away the original ink, allowing them to alter the payee name and dollar amount. The check is then fraudulently deposited or cashed.
How to protect yourself
• Avoid placing outgoing mail containing checks in residential mailboxes.
• Consider dropping mail directly inside the post office.
• Use a gel pen with permanent ink when writing checks.
• Monitor your bank account closely after issuing a check.
• Watch for any unusual or unauthorized transactions until the check has fully cleared.
If you notice suspicious activity on your account, contact your financial institution immediately and report the incident to local law enforcement.
Staying vigilant and monitoring your accounts can help prevent financial loss. Please share this information with friends and family to help keep our community protected.
