MANSFIELD — Kaylen Brooks’ sensational sophomore season isn’t over yet, but the postseason accolades already are piling up.
Mansfield Senior’s sharpshooter was selected to the Division II/III first team when the District 6 Coach’s Association awards were unveiled Tuesday afternoon.
The 6-foot Brooks averaged 22.3 points a game, the highest single-game scoring average for the Tygers since Ricky Minard averaged 22.5 points a night during the 1999-2000 season. He has scored 491 points with at least one game remaining this season and has 790 points in his first two seasons.
Madison senior Justin McCraney and Lexington senior Dantrell Hughes joined Brooks on the first team. McCraney averaged 15.2 points a game, while Hughes was good for 13.7 points a night.
Ashland’s Paxon Ediger was the Division II/III Player of the Year. Ashland’s Jason Hess was the Coach of the Year.
Senior High’s Rashad Reed Jr. and D.J. Corbin were second-team choices, along with Lex freshman Jayden Perkins. Reed averaged 11.5 points a game, while Corbin scored 9.2 points a night. Perkins averaged 10.5 points a game.
Madison’s Kaleb Gordon was an honorable-mention pick. The senior averaged 10.8 points a game.
Division IV
Shelby’s Brayden DeVito was selected the Division IV Player of the Year.
A senior, DeVito averaged 24.1 points a game. He will play football for the Air Force Academy next year.
Ontario sophomores Cardae Brown and Trindon Flenoury joined DeVito on the first team. Brown averaged 22 points a game, while Flenoury averaged 18 points a night.
Shelby’s Landon Foltz, Galion’s Parker Finch and Clear Fork’s Carter Coole were second-teamers. Foltz averaged 12.3 points a game, while Tinch scored 12.4 points a night and Coole averaged 11.1 points.
Shelby’s Michael Shepherd was an honorable-mention selection. The Division I football prospect averaged 8.3 points a game.
Division VI
Crestview’s Karter Goon earned a spot on the District 6 first team in Division VI. A senior, Goon averaged 17 points a game.
Mansfield Christian’s Josiah Schleusener was a second-team choice. The senior averaged 11 points a night.
Crestview’s Daniel Wells and Drew Doerr were honorable-mention picks. Wells averaged 13 points a game and Spoor averaged 11 points a game.
Division VII
Plymouth’s Jarrett Burrer was chosen the Player of the Year in Division VII.
A senior, Burrer averaged 19 points a game. He scored his 1,000th career point in a loss to Mansfield Christian late last month.
Crestline’s Kody Lawhorn was a first-team selection. The junior averaged 15 points a game.
St. Peter’s Wesley Roberts and Markeis Johnson, Plymouth’s Izaya Reynolds and Crestline’s Kieran Barnett were selected to the second-team. Roberts averaged 17 points a game while Johnson was good for 14 points a night. Reynolds averaged 14 points a game and Barnett averaged 11.
Lucas’ Cooper Day was an honorable-mention pick. The junior averaged 11 points a game.
