ONTARIO — One Ontario facility is hoping to bring extra joy to the seniors who call it home, with Christmas just around the corner — and they are turning to the community for help.
Ontario Pointe Assisted Living Center, located at 2124 Park Avenue West, is celebrating the holiday season with its second annual Adopt a Senior initiative.
Community members are invited to “adopt” a resident or donate a general care package for those who may not receive visitors during the holiday season. The deadline to drop off items is Dec. 5.
Adopt a Senior initiative aims to make the season brighter
Activity Director AnnMarie Coleman said many residents don’t have family visiting during the holidays, which is why the center launched its Adopt a Senior initiative.
This year, the program offers two ways to give: adopt a specific senior and fulfill their personal wish list, or donate a care package containing everyday essentials.
“The holidays are so important to me,” Coleman said. “It should be that way for them, too.”
Last year was the center’s first time doing the Adopt a Senior initiative, Coleman said community support exceeded all their expectations.
Beginning Monday, Dec. 8, staff will start wrapping gifts and preparing for the celebration on Dec. 16. The extra time between receiving donations and the party allows staff to determine whether they need to purchase additional items for residents who may have fewer gifts.
“While our facility can’t purchase big bulk items, we can help with small things if certain people have a smaller amount of gifts,” she said.
“We will have a big Christmas party for them on Dec. 16,” Coleman added. “In the past, we even had Santa show up.”
How to get involved — and what to donate
Those interested in adopting a senior or donating a care package can call the facility at 419-529-6447, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. If Coleman is unavailable, staff will take information allowing her to respond.
To help staff match items correctly, they ask for gifts to remain unwrapped, though donations of gift bags and wrapping paper are appreciated.
Suggested care package items for both men and women include:
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- Body wash
- Deodorant
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrushes
- Denture care products
- Razors
- Lotions
- Q-tips
- Washcloths or towels
- Hair brushes or combs
- Shower loofahs
- Hair rejuvenation products
- Shower ear plugs
