Madison L. Sweeney, age 81, resident of Mansfield died Thursday, January 23, 2014 in MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital.
Born September 5, 1932 in Rowan County, Kentucky to Everette and Lottie (McKenzie) Sweeney he had been a Shelby resident for 16 years, moving to Mansfield in 1959. He had been employed for 34 years with Empire-Detroit Steel Co. in Mansfield retiring in 1991. Madison enjoyed playing cards and pool.
Survivors include his son, Garlie (Leslie) Sweeney of Mansfield; two daughters, Cyndi (Dave) Tressler of Poquoson, Virginia and Marlene (Mike) Pittenger of Mansfield; daughter-in-law, Brenda (Sweeney) Cress; five grandchildren, Angel Henderson, Carlyle Lamson III, Tonie (Tamara) Sweeney, Michael (Sherri) Sweeney and Andrew Sweeney; seven great-grandchildren, Victoria Lamson, Kandessa Henderson, Zachary Sweeney, Devin Phillips, Oryan Lewis, James Sweeney and Bianca Harvey; one half brother, Larry Hardin of Mansfield; one half sister, Betty Glower of Troy; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by wife of 49 years, Hazel (Adkins) Sweeney on Feb. 18, 2009; one son, Anthony Sweeney, great granddaughter, Katherine Rose Henderson; five sisters, Jewell Patton, Beaulah Pursley, Lillian Gutschall, Nellie Parker and Creta Moyer.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Monday, January 27, 2014 at the Barkdull Funeral Home where military honors will be provided by the Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Reverend S.T Adkins will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Memorial expressions may be made in care of Barkdull Funeral Home to help defray funeral costs.
