MANSFIELD — Columbia Gas and Mansfield firefighters responded quickly Tuesday, after they discovered a gas leak just outside a Malabar Intermediate School entrance.
Mansfield Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Chris Speelman said Columbia Gas came to the school and determined the source of the leak.
“They found out what was causing the leak and turned it off,” Speelman said.
He said it was an easy fix for the gas company and the school.
“The leak was coming from an area outside one of the doors where people would frequently enter and exit,” he said.
Speelman said the doors through which the leak occurred were not an entrance that the students would use, keeping them from being in jeopardy.
Once crews found and turned off the source of the leak, students were able to return inside the school, Speelman said.
“As long as the source of the leak is turned off, they are OK,” he said.
A message was left for Superintendent Stan Jefferson, but he had not responded by the time of publication.
Principal Tom Hager was in a debriefing when contacted, and could not provide a comment.
