Ashland and Knox counties are currently under a Level 1 Snow Emergency. The Level 2 Snow Emergencies for Crawford and Richland Counites have been lifted.
The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued an updated winter weather message at 3:57 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29. A Wind Chill Warning remains in effect until noon Wednesday.
Southwest winds of 5 to 10 mph are expected to increase to 15 to 20 mph by midday. And the temperatures will rise into the single digits above zero by noon. Wind chill readings of 20 to 25 degrees below zero will be common early this morning though a few locations may be as low as 30 degrees below zero. By noon wind chill readings will be around 10 below zero, according to the weather service report.
Hypothermia and frostbite are possible with extended exposure to the cold. If you will be outdoors, use common sense and dress warmly in layers, making sure that all exposed skin is covered.
A Wind Chill Warning means life threatening cold with wind chill temperatures computed to be -40 degrees or less for at least 3 hours. Exposure to this combination of strong winds and low temperatures without protective clothing will quickly lead to frostbite and/or hypothermia. Longer exposures can be fatal.
Local counties impacted include Ashland, Crawford, Knox, Richland, Marion, and Morrow. Northern Ohio counties are also included.
