The stories are heart-wrenching. Bank tellers ask questions, but out of fear, seniors often lie. It’s not the typical “accent of the phone” scammers we need to fear anymore; we’re aware of them now.

The real danger comes from someone who could be your American neighbor, pulling into their driveway and being handed cash with no record or way to retrieve it. It’s someone’s grandmother getting tricked by a “sheriff” on the phone from another state, asking for bail money for a grandson supposedly arrested while away at college.

It could be the stranger calling on behalf of your granddaughter, sobbing too hard to call herself because she’s stranded on the side of the road. Or it might be you being threatened with jail time due to unpaid property taxes your deceased husband forgot to settle. You can either pay up or risk everything and return to your everyday life.

There’s a supposed sheriff with a office badge number and the name of a past or present officer asking for donations send to: P.O. Box.

Imagine your grandmother in the Wal-Mart parking lot handing over her life-saving medication to a stranger in a Honda Civic, just out of sight of the cameras. Front license plates are no longer required.

Once you hand over cash without identifying the people involved in this scheme, nothing can be done.
