MANSFIELD — The Music Academy of Karate and Empowerment raised $2,751.44 on Monday during its “kick-a-punch-a-thon,” an initiative designed to generate funds for the installation of mirrors in the downtown dojo.

Mirrors are crucial educational tools that empower instructors to lead students effectively without the need to mirror their movements, according to Sensei Reneta Music.

Furthermore, these mirrors enable instructors to closely monitor students’ postures and stances, allowing for timely corrections that enhance learning without causing distractions during kata practice, Music said.

The non-profit academy opened its doors to the community Monday at 44 W. Fourth St., offering refreshments as students engaged in an inspiring challenge to collectively complete 1,000 kicks and punches within one hour.

Every class, beginning with the youngest participants aged 4-5, exceeded their ambitious goals, according to Music.

The 4-5 year old class impressively executed 500 punches and kicks in just 30 minutes, while the 5 p.m. class achieved their target in 45 minutes and the 6 p.m. class accomplished their objective in a mere 35 minutes. Those latter classes have students ages 6 to 13.

The palpable excitement among the 27 participating students and five instructors underscored their remarkable achievements, Music said.

The fundraising objective was set at $3,200 to facilitate the acquisition of mirrors, and within an impressive four-hour period, the academy raised $2,751.44.

“The dedication and initiative displayed by students and their parents in seeking sponsors for their kicks and punches was truly commendable,” Music said.

Grandmaster Gary Music, present at the event, expressed his pride by stating, “It fills me with pride to observe these students working diligently to achieve their goals.”
