Download the App

For Apple Products: Visit the app store on your device and search The Source Local News App. Click the grey “Get” button to download. Please note, depending on your Apple account settings, you may be asked to confirm your Apple Id password to download.

For Android Products: Visit the Google Play store on your device and search The Source News. Click the green “Install” button to download.

Get Started

Getting started is easy — and it only takes a few minutes.

What you’ll need:

  • The email address & password you use for your Source account
  • Your phone or tablet device

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Download the app
  2. Open the app
    • Once the app finishes downloading, tap Open.
  3. Tap “Sign In”
    • When the welcome screens appear, tap Sign In on the first screen.
    • Tap Continue to move forward.
  4. Enter your email and password
    • Use the email and password connected to your Source account.
  5. If you forgot your password
    • Tap Lost password on the sign-in screen. Enter your email address. Tap Get new password. Check your email and follow the instructions to create a new password. Return to the app and sign in with your new password.
    Good to know: If you need to see the welcome screens again, tap Account in the bottom-right corner of the app and select Welcome screens.
  6. Turn on notifications (recommended)
    • When asked, tap Enable notifications. Your phone may briefly open your settings. Tap Allow notifications, then return to the app.
    Why this helps: Notifications let you know about breaking news and important updates.
  7. Choose your home region
    • Select the region you read most often. You can change this anytime in your settings or switch between regions later.
    Good to know: Source members can read unlimited news stories from all regions.
  8. Tap “Let’s go”
    • You’re all set!

Navigate Account Settings

The My Account section is where you control how the app works for you.

In this guide, we’ll walk through everything you can adjust in the My Account tab, found in the bottom right corner of the app.

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Open your account settings

  • Open the Source app.
  • Tap Account in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Choose which region you see news from

  1. Tap “Choose your region”
    • This controls which local news you see first.
  2. Select a region
    • For example: Richland, Ashland or Knox.
    • Tap Confirm.
  3. Return to the home screen
    • You’ll notice the logo and stories change to match the region you selected.

Good to know: You can switch between regions anytime.


Follow topics and authors you care about

  1. Tap “Follow your interest”
    • This helps personalize the For You section of the app.
  2. Choose topics you like
    • Tap topics such as News, Sports or Business.
    • Tap Show more to see additional options.
  3. Choose authors you want to follow
    • Check or uncheck writers so you don’t miss their stories.
  4. Save your selections
    • Go back to the home screen.
    • Tap For You in the bottom navigation.
    • You’ll now see stories based on the preferences you have selected in the For You tab.

Change the order of sections at the top of the app

  1. Tap “Edit timelines”
    • These are the sections across the top (like Latest, News, Obituaries, Sports).
  2. Move sections
    • Press and hold the three lines next to a section.
    • Drag it up or down to change the order.
  3. Hide sections you don’t want
    • Turn a section off if you don’t want to see it.

Good to know: If you hide a section, it won’t appear at the top of your screen anymore.


Adjust text size and screen mode

  1. Change text size
    • Use the slider to make text larger or smaller.
    • The change applies everywhere, including inside stories.
  2. Choose light or dark mode
    • Select Light or Dark mode.
    • The app will stay in that mode until you change it.

Good to know: Dark mode can be easier on your eyes, especially at night.

Read, Search, Share and Save Content

The Source app makes it easy to find stories, save them for later, and share them with others.

Step-by-step instructions:

Read the latest stories

  1. Start on the Latest screen
    • When you open the app, you’ll usually see “Latest” first.
    • This shows recent stories from all sections, like News, Education, Business and Sports.
  2. Browse by section
    • Swipe across the top of the screen to choose a section.
    • Each section shows up to the last 100 stories published.

Search for a story

  1. Tap the search icon
    • Tap the magnifying glass at the top of the screen.
  2. Type what you’re looking for
    • Enter a word or phrase (for example, a topic or group name).
    • Tap a result to open the story.

Good to know: Search works for stories published after October 2025. Older stories can still be found on our website.


Save stories to read later

  1. Save a story
    • Tap the bookmark (ribbon) icon on a story.
    • You can save a story from the story list or while reading it.
  2. Find saved stories
    • Tap For You in the bottom menu.
    • Select Saved to see stories you’ve bookmarked.
  3. Remove a saved story
    • Tap the bookmark icon again to remove it from your saved list.

Share a story with others

  1. Share from the story list or inside a story
    • Tap the Share icon on the story card, or
    • Open the story and tap Share at the top.
  2. Choose how to share
    • Text the story to someone
    • Copy the link to send by email or message

Good to know: If the person you share with has the app, the story will open in the app. If not, it will open in a web browser and suggest downloading the app.

Play Games and Puzzles

The Source app includes daily puzzles you can play for fun, focus or relaxation.

Step-by-step instructions:

Find the games section

  1. Open the Games tab
    • Tap Games in the bottom menu (second icon from the left).
    • You’ll see today’s daily puzzles.

Play daily puzzles

  1. Choose a puzzle
    • Each day includes five puzzles.
    • Paying members can play all puzzles.
    • Registered users can play the daily free crossword.
    • Locked puzzles will show a lock icon.

Go back to missed puzzles

  1. Open a puzzle timeline
    • Tap a specific puzzle type (Crosswords, Sudoku, Wordy or Make Tracks).
    • Scroll down to see puzzles from previous days.

Good to know: You can always come back and finish puzzles you missed.


Use game help and settings

  1. View the rules
    • Inside any puzzle, tap Rules to see how the game works.
  2. Adjust settings
    • You can turn the timer on or off in most games.
    • This lets you play at your own pace.
  3. Use hints if you get stuck
    • Tap Hint for help.
    • Options may include:
      • Showing part of the answer
      • Solving the puzzle
      • Resetting the puzzle
  4. Check your work
    • Tap Check to see if your answers are correct.
    • The app will let you know if something is wrong.

Puzzle-specific tips

Wordy

  • A word-guessing game similar to Wordle
  • Includes rules, hints and answer checks

Make Tracks

  • Connect paths between points
  • Hints can show a track, solve or reset the puzzle

Sudoku

  • Includes extra visual aids:
    • Highlight rows and columns
    • Highlight matching numbers
  • Hints can reveal a cell, a section or reset the puzzle

Crosswords

  • Use arrows to move between clues
  • Some clues may require two words
  • Hints can reveal letters or words
  • You can turn the timer on or off

Use the App like a Pro — Overview of all Features

This guide gives a high-level overview of what you can do in the app. You don’t need to use every feature to enjoy it — just start with what feels helpful to you.

Step-by-step overview:

Read local news from all Source sites

  1. Choose your home region
    • When you sign in, you’ll pick the region you read most often.
    • This region will load first each time you open the app.
  2. Switch regions anytime
    • Tap Account → Choose your region.
    • Select a different area to see news from another Source site.

Good to know: Source Members get unlimited stories from all the regions.


Browse recent stories by section

  1. Use the timelines at the top
    • These sections (like Latest, News, Obituaries, Sports) show the most recent stories.
    • Each section includes up to the last 100 stories published.

Search for stories instead of scrolling

  1. Use search
    • Tap the search option in the top right corner of the app.
    • Look up stories, topics or keywords to quickly find what you want.

Save stories to read later

  1. Bookmark a story
    • Tap the bookmark icon on any story.
    • Saved stories appear in the For You section.

Good to know: This is helpful if you want to come back to a story later.


See stories based on your interests

  1. View your personalized feed
    • In the For You section, you’ll see stories based on:
      • Topics you follow
      • Authors you follow
    • This creates a custom feed just for you.

Play daily puzzles

  1. Access puzzles
    • The app includes daily puzzles.
    • Members can play all available puzzles.
    • Non-members can play one free daily crossword.
  2. Catch up on past puzzles
    • You can go back and play puzzles from previous days.

Listen to podcasts

  1. Play podcasts in the app
    • Listen to locally produced podcasts directly in the app.
    • You can:
      • Play immediately
      • Add episodes to a queue
  2. Listen while using your phone
    • Podcasts continue playing even if:
      • Your phone screen is off
      • You open another app
    • As long as no other audio is playing, the podcast will continue.

Customize how the app looks and feels

  1. Adjust your experience
    • Change the order of sections
    • Hide sections you don’t want
    • Adjust text size
    • Switch between light and dark mode

Membership access

  1. Understand access levels
    • Non-Members:
      • Limited story access
      • Community calendar
      • One daily crossword
      • Podcasts
    • Members:
      • Unlimited stories
      • Full puzzle access
      • All app features
  2. Manage your membership
    • Tap Account → Be a member to join
    • Tap Manage membership to:
      • Update payment information
      • Change plans

  1. Report an issue
    • Use Report an issue in Account settings to report a bug.

    • Tap Share this app to send the app link to friends or family.

Do I need to be a member to use the app?

No. Anyone can download and explore the app.

Here’s what non-members can do:

  • Explore the app and its features
  • Read up to two free articles per month
  • Listen to podcasts
  • View the community events calendar
  • Read obituaries
  • Play the daily free crossword

Members get full access to everything the app offers, including:

  • Unlimited access to stories across all Source newsrooms
    (Richland Source, Ashland Source, Knox Pages and Delaware Source)
  • Unlimited access to all puzzles, including:
    • Crosswords
    • Sudoku (easy and hard)
    • Make Tracks
    • Wordy
  • A clean, customizable reading experience designed for regular readers
  • Easy access without needing to log in repeatedly across different browsers or websites

For members, the app is the simplest and most convenient way to stay connected to local news.

Will I have to log in every time?

No. Once you sign in, your login stays active for up to 365 days.

You won’t need to sign in each time you open the app unless you log out or change devices.

I’m a member — how do I sign in?
  1. Download the Source Local News app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Open the app. You’ll see a few welcome screens.
  3. Tap Sign In.
  4. Enter the email address and password connected to your Source account.
    • If you forgot your password, tap Lost password and follow the instructions.
  5. Choose whether to enable notifications (optional, but recommended for breaking news).
  6. Select your home region.
    • You can change this anytime and switch between regions later.
  7. Tap “Let’s go!” on the final screen.

You’re all set and ready to explore the app.

I’m not a member — how do I join?

You can become a member directly through the app.

  1. After downloading the app, move through the welcome screens.
  2. On the final screen, tap Be a Member.
    • You can also find Be a Member anytime under Account settings.
  3. Select your primary news site:
    • Richland Source
    • Ashland Source
    • Knox Pages
    • Delaware Source
  4. Tap Become a Member.
  5. Choose a membership plan:
    • Single (one person)
    • Duo (two people)
  6. Tap Join.
  7. Sign in if you already have an account, or create one if you’re new.

Once you’re finished, you’ll have full access to the app’s features.
