Bonnie J. Halterman, 90

Our beautiful, beloved mom, grandma, sister, friend and treasured gift from the Lord, Bonnie Jean Halterman, 90 of Ashland, formerly of Mansfield, passed into Heaven on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, and met her Lord and Savior, Jesus, as well her dear, ornery husband, David.  Bonnie was graciously and tenderly cared for by staff at Belmont Tower at Brethren Care Village, the Wasen Rehabilitation Center and Gentiva Hospice.  When she passed, Bonnie’s family was at her side.

She was born on June 15, 1934, in Congress, Ohio, the 5th child of six to Donald K. and Florence Pauline (nee Martin) Cooper. Bonnie graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1952. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Bowling Green State University, Class of 1956.

She married the love of her life, David E. Halterman on September 29, 1956. They quietly served the Lord with joy and reflected the love of Jesus by their consistent example and faith. They were the ultimate example of being the most loving, engaged and present parents and grandparents to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren while attending all their many endeavors and life events. They were our biggest cheerleaders in life, always teaching wisdom, generosity, integrity, hope, strength in the Lord, walking humbly and serving others.

Bonnie was known as a most caring, loving, creative and gentle
Kindergarten and first grade teacher in Nankin Elementary, Springboro, Ohio, and Ashland City Schools. It was her gift to teach and mold the hearts and minds of children.

Bonnie retired from Ashland City Schools in 1995. In the late 1970’s, Bonnie was honored as Teacher of the Year in Mapleton Local School District. In 1995, Bonnie was chosen Teacher of the Year by Ashland City Schools. She was a member of the Ohio Teachers Association and the Ashland Teachers Association.

Bonnie was previously a member at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Ashland where she taught children and women’s Bible study groups, served as children’s superintendent and on the pastor-parish committee.  More recently, she was a member of Trinity Grace Fellowship in Mansfield, where she served as a children’s Sunday school teacher and taught children’s sermons.

Bonnie is survived by three daughters, Heidi (Stephen) Howell of Ashland, Jill (Michael) Miller of Medina, and Jennifer (Ron) Blue of Medina; eight grandchildren, Jacob (Pami) Howell, Hannah Howell, and Luke (Jessica) Howell, Aaron (Elizabeth) Miller, Andrew (Jessica) Miller, Sean (Cameron) Blue, Nathan (Halle) Blue, and Sarah Blue; nine great-grandchildren, Judah, Piper, Gabriel, Huxley and Crew Howell, Finn and Margot Miller, and Rhett and Henry Blue; two sisters-in-law, Betty Cooper of Mansfield and Bonnie Lash of Ashland; two brothers-in-law, Arnold (Susan) Halterman of Georgia and Gary (Beverly) Halterman of Ashland; and stepbrother Richard (Joanne) Swineford.

Cooper; stepmother, Polly Cooper; two sisters, Patricia Clarkson and Kay Cooper; three brothers, Gary Cooper, Richard (Nora) Cooper, and William (Connie) Cooper; brother-in-law, Dennis Lash.
