LEXINGTON — The Sports Car Club of America will return its Runoffs event to Mid-Ohio next month for the first time since 2005.
The 53rd annual National Championships (sponsored by Garmin VIRB) will take place Sept. 19 to 25 will take place at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The Runoffs enjoyed a 12-year run from 1994 to 2005 at the road course.
The largest Runoffs on record came at Mid-Ohio in 2004, when 709 cars competed in the event. The Runoffs has crowned Club Racing National Champions in a winner-take-all, single race format since 1964.
“A whole new generation of SCCA drivers will experience the Runoffs at Mid-Ohio for the first time during this exciting weekend,” Mid-Ohio noted at its website.
“We are excited for the chance to showcase our area’s legendary hospitality to this group again,” said Lee Tasseff, of the Mansfield/Richland County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The Convention and Visitor’s Bureau is at the track all week in the Welcome Booth to connect SCCA members to community resources. On Monday, Sept. 19 there will be a “Welcome Dinner” for drivers, crews and workers to kick off the week.
“After 11 years it was the number one thing remembered by SCCA members as they thought of returning to our area,” Tasseff said. “Through the efforts of the community, via the CVB and Richland Hospitality, we welcome this group who will essentially be living here up to 14 days.
“Drivers, crews, workers, and fans will purchase goods and services locally. This is significant as the Runoffs will bring in an estimated $7 million in local economic impact ($84,000,000 since 1994). Since the group makes such an impact on our local businesses, we roll out the red carpet.”
