MANSFIELD — Liberty Nursing Center has teamed up with other members of this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s Planning Committee to host a kick-off family carnival Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the 535 Lexington Ave. facility.

The community is invited to the free event to feature food, fun and music in the Liberty Nursing Center front parking lot. Current walk teams, past walk teams and walk teams that still need to register are encouraged to attend.

Family members and friends wanting to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias should also plan to attend. An Alzheimer’s Association representative will be available to provide information about the disease, available community resources and information about the walk.

This year’s Mansfield Area Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Saturday, Sept. 17 on the OSU-Mansfield Campus. Festivities will be based at Eisenhower Hall and will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude before noon.

For more information about the kick off, to sign up for the walk or for information about the walk, contact Cindy Jakubick at the Mansfield Alzheimer’s Association office, 419-522-5050, visit www.alz.org/walk or check out the association’s Northwest Ohio Chapter Facebook page.

Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, and the only one in the top 10 without a known prevention or cure.

The Mansfield area kick off and walk are designed to raise awareness of the disease and to help reduce the stigma associated with the disease. Also, the walk is the primary way for the Alzheimer’s Association to raise funds to help provide local services and to advance research efforts to find a way to prevent and cure Alzheimer’s as well as to find new, more effective ways to treat the disease.
