MANSFIELD — A journey to the state championship football game delayed the Lucas basketball season until Friday night. But that didn’t seem to bother the Cubs, who rolled to a 43-32 victory at the Franciscan Activity Center.
Eleven of the 13 players that dressed for varsity in the season opener participated in the historic football season. Still, their transition seemed smooth.
Coach Taylor Iceman’s squad moved on top 7-4 in a defensive struggle, and owned a 18-11 halftime advantage. Lucas maintained a 30-21 margin heading to the final eight minutes and the Spartans (2-3) were unable to rally in the fourth quarter.
Senior Logan Niswander scored 13 points to pace the Cubs. Junior Riley Gossom chipped in 12 and Ethan Sauder added eight points.
Senior forward Jonah Ramey topped St. Peter’s with 16 points, while classmate Shawn Perkins-Harris contributed eight points.
The Cubs return to action Saturday, Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. against East Knox at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. St. Peter’s is back in action Saturday night, Dec. 21 at Kipp Academy.
