Ashland’s first courthouse was located at the corner of Cottage and Second Streets.

The original courthouse housed the treasurer, auditor, recorder, clerk of courts, probate and common pleas judge offices, the commissioners’ office and courtroom.

On May 16, 1884, George Horn, 24, and William Gribben, 28, were hanged on the lawn between the courthouse and jail for the murder of Henry Williams. This became the last public hanging in the State of Ohio.
