MANSFIELD — Lt. Joseph D. Petrycki will be sworn in Tuesday as the new Mansfield Police Department assistant chief.

“He’s excelled in many ways,” Mayor Tim Theaker said. “I think he’s a perfect match. He’ll be a great addition to the (command staff).”

Theaker and Chief Keith Porch annouced the promotion Friday afternoon.

“Throughout his 23-year career, Lieutenant Petrycki has served as a field officer, firearms instructor, crisis intervention instructor and technical crash investigator and he has extensive experience in investigation and tactical operations,” the release said.

“He also holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and sociology from Ashland University.”

Petrycki has held command positions, which he said helped him develop stronger leadership skills to help him in his new appointment.

“METRICH is a multi-jurisditional task force that requires a special skill set,” he said. “Between my time there and with SWAT as a commander, it’s helped me tremendously.”

Petrycki will be sworn in at 1:30 p.m. in the Mansfield City Council Chambers.

“I’m looking forward to continuing the leadership in place before me,” Petrycki said. “Working with Richland County (police) chiefs and the sheriff and I’m looking forward to working with the fine men and women within this department.”

Petrycki joined the department in 1996, was promoted to sergeant in 2008 and lieutenant in 2014.

Petrycki served as a sergeant in the Community Services Bureau, sergeant in the Major Crimes Unit and sergeant in the Special Investigative Section/METRICH.

As a lieutenant, he served in the Community Services Bureau as the night watch commander and is currently assigned as the commander of the METRICH Enforcement Unit.

He is a former member of the Allied Special Operations Response Team (ASORT/SWAT) where he served as an operator, long rifleman and team leader.

In 2012, he was appointed the commander of ASORT until he retired from the team in late 2016.

Also on Tuesday, Sgt. Donald K. Rhinehardt will be promoted to lieutenant at 2:30 p.m. He has been with MPD since 2006. He currently serves on the Community Service Bureau Patrol Section.
